The Great Gatsby Cupcakes

As the UK release for The Great Gatsby is this Thursday, I thought I would show you how to make some very fancy looking, yet relatively easy to make, themed cupcakes.  The design is based on the promotional poster for the movie.

I created these for a party and were somewhat of an experiment for me as I'd not used edible spray paint before (pretty scary stuff).  I'd decided how I was going to make them in my head without really thinking through whether it would...thank goodness it did though!

What you will need:

1 batch gluten-free vanilla cupcakes (recipe here)
1 pack of ready roll black icing
Cookie cutter the size of the top of a cupcake
Edible gold spray paint
White card or cartridge paper
Printer
Scalpel
Firstly you need to make a stencil for your cupcakes.  To create the stencil you need a printed image of which you can cut out.  I copied and pasted The Great Gatsby poster into photoshop, selected the area I wanted to print and then turned it into a black and white line image simply because I didn't want to waste ink (I did this using invert and threshold).  More easily you can just directly print out the poster image onto card and then carefully cut out the black areas.  If some areas like the 'GG' logo, are floating in a black area, make sure you leave a small piece of card joining them to the rest of the image.

Roll out your icing to about 3mm or so thick and cut out circle shapes.  There are two ways in which you can create your image on the icing.  The first is to carefully press the stencil onto the icing, spray the gold icing spray onto it and carefully remove the stencil.  The second is to use the spray painted stencil as a stamp (remember this will create a reversed image).

You then just need to simply lay each sprayed circle of icing onto each cupcake.

Are any of you planning on going to see The Great Gatsby when it comes out?  I really enjoyed the Gatsby themed party which I baked these cakes for as the outfits were brilliant, plus you can't go wrong with a champagne cocktail.  Above is an Instagram shot of my makeup and a little bit of my outfit from the party.  Let's not speak about those eyebrows...bloody hell.  Speaking of which, you can follow me on Instagram here.

  1. Hi, your cupcakes are fantastic. I was wondering which brand of edible gold spray paint you used to add the gold detail? Many thanks.
