The Birds (and a Squirrel)

I recently spent the afternoon at an RSPB nature reserve testing out one of my birthday presents, a telephoto lens.
I have to admit, I was a little intimidated by the ridiculously large lens toting birdwatchers (large lenses, not large birdwatchers...), but I figured that we all have to start somewhere!  I was so excited to be able to photograph wildlife without having to be as stealthy as I can in order to get a half-decent picture, which turns out is not that stealthy at all.

Sitting still and quiet in a bird hide was a bit of a shock to the system I have to admit and that sort of enforced silence inevitably gives me the giggles.  We walked around the reserve dipping in and out of various hides, but none really gave the best positioning to photograph anything particularly up close until we returned back to the visitor centre, where there was a hide right next to it.  There were a multitude of bird feeders and old tree stumps covered in seeds, where many types of birds fed.  There were goldfinches, greenfinches, robins, blue tits, bullfinches, chaffinches, pheasants, mallards and a not so feathered creature, a very opportunistic squirrel.

Only once my fingers had become numb from the cold after photographing away like a woman possessed, did I drag myself away.  I am so pleased with the results that I got from my new lens (it's this one if you're interested) and I really can't wait until next spring and summer when there is more wildlife around.  I don't think I'm a convert to sitting in bird hides, I much prefer the excitement of stumbling across something when on a walk or hike, however this was so great for a first proper go at close-up animal photography.

  2. I AM SO JEALOUS YOU SAW A BULLFINCH. And breath. They are the most beautiful birdy. I know barely anything about birds (shocking considering I work for the RSPB), I just know I would love to see one. Beautiful photos x

    1. Hahahaha, this genuinely had me laughing for ages. They really are beautiful little birds, was quite hard to contain my excitement when surrounded by serious birdwatcher types, all sitting in silence! Thank you x

  5. These photos are AMAZING! I was running around campus with a friend trying to get pictures of the squirrels that were darting around. At first we meant to just walk around and have a relaxing afternoon enjoying our campus, but after a failed attempt at photographing a squirrel, we felt like it was a competition between us and the squirrel. The squirrel was probably laughing at us two humans. Anwaaaays, yeahhh awesome shots!! I love the clarity of the foreground and how beautifully blended the background is. -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's
