Wednesday Words #6

This is a phrase that I try to live by as much as possible.

Consumerism as a whole irks me somewhat, so I try my best to not get caught up in the hype of having to have the next new thing.  Now this doesn't mean that I don't buy things, I do.  I buy all sorts of things that are for the most part totally pointless, I just try to limit this as much as I can.

Maybe I'm just getting tighter with my money as I get older, I don't really know.  What I do know however, is that the things that I value above anything else, are not things at all.  Experiences, especially ones that are shared with the people I love are the most important of 'things' to me.

The best way I can explain the value of things compared to the value of moments, is when I think about birthdays or Christmases past.  What stands out the most in my mind?  Is it the gifts? Not really no, and whilst I'm always grateful for gifts and love giving them too, what I remember about these occasions are the jokes, the anecdotes and the 'do you remember when so-and-so did that' stories.  These are the things I will treasure, not the mobile phones, lipsticks or shoes.

  1. Yes, yes, yes. I so think that moments are way more important than things, and are invaluable! Last summer I paid to DO an internship (unpaid) in a foreign country (it covered housing), but I still had to pay for my airfare, food/drink, and travel while I was there. A lot of people told me I was crazy for doing it and that it was a waste of money - "Don't you want a new computer instead?"

What I took away the experience was so much more than a computer would have ever brought me. Yes, it was expensive, but I met so many people, got amazing job experience, got to travel around Europe, and just grew so much as a person. It was a summer of moments that I wouldn't trade for anything!
