A Botanical Picnic with Unexpected Guests

In-between rainy days, Kyle and I managed to spend a free afternoon picnicking at the Botanical Gardens.  Picnics are by far one of my favourite pastimes to enjoy when the weather is good.  I love nothing more than packing up a bag stuffed with delicious food and drink, then finding somewhere beautiful to devour the lot al fresco.

We arrived armed with Greek salad, crispy halloumi, crackers, fruit and chocolate covered rice cakes (they are SO yummy), plus the obligatory tartan blanket.  We chose a small patch of grass bordered with bright purple and pink rhododendron bushes and with an area of pink, yellow and white wild flowers in the centre, that hummed with the sound of bumble bees.
Our lunch was delicious, although we ended up sharing it with some unexpected guests.  The picnic-crashers were of the small and furry variety and were very intent on eating our blueberries.
They didn't linger near the picnic blanket for too long and retreated up trees and into bushes, as there was yet another furry creature who didn't care for the blueberries, rather the ones eating them.

A rather huge, but absolutely gorgeous ginger tom put an abrupt end to the squirrel feeding, although it was very nice of him to come join us for a little while.

They may not have been formally invited, but our guests, in combination with the stunning floral surroundings, certainly made for a more interesting picnic than I had anticipated!

  1. Beautiful photos! This post makes me want to go for a picnic really badly. Your lunch looks so tasty (halloumi? yes please!), and the squirrels and the cat are so cute.

    1. Aw thanks :) You see I like sandwiches, but I'm not that bothered about bread unless it is REALLY good bread (although my OH would happily only eat bread for every meal). Thanks Carina, I hope you do too x
