Portraits and Confidence

Something a little bit different today in that it is neither nature nor food related (I know, shocking).

As you may know, I work as an Illustrator, however I have recently gone freelance with my photography too.  This was a scary step despite having been into photography for years, I have only learned to use a DSLR properly over the past 3 years or so and still lack the confidence to officially say that I'm a 'professional'.

I focus mainly on nature as that is what I love the most, however I guess that if I'm being honest, a small part of it may be that nature won't say if it thinks I've taken a shit picture.  Whilst I'd love to be good at portraits, I definitely need to build my confidence up.  That being said, I attended the most recent Peddler market here in Sheffield (you can read about my first trip to one here) and didn't really do that well at photographing the food as I was too busy eating all of it, however I did get a little snap happy when Looci Sohma performed.

Looci performed along to the amazing DJ set with fire and an angle grinder.  I loved the contrast of the light from the fire and sparks with the dark blue sky, it was like having small fireworks going off right in front of you!  I was so pleased to find that it made for some portraits that I'm actually proud of.

If anyone were to inspire confidence, it would be Looci; I'd certainly never have the guts to do what she does.  It most definitely put the worry and panic about my photography into stark comparison.  I have since decided to try and not be too precious about it and seeing as I'm confident in my drawing abilities, I can learn to be confident in my photography as well.

I'm hoping to share more of my photography that doesn't necessarily fit into my usual blog post format.  I'd love to know if you'd like to see more.
