Blackberry Basil Vodka Smash

Blackberries are one of my favourite things about September; gathering my wicker basket and wellies, then heading out to hunt for a spot with the best crop of delicious berries.  I love to make all sorts of things from the fruit, such as cakes, smoothies, liqueurs and in this case, muddled in a sweet and refreshing cocktail.

Serves one

Ingredients

4 large basil leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
8 large blackberries, plus 3 for garnish
½ to 1 tsp sugar (or sweetener of choice)
ice
25 ml vodka
25 ml Chambord
juice of 1 ½ lemons
soda water

1.  Tear up the basil leaves and muddle with the blackberries and sugar in a glass.

2.  Add a few ice cubes and then pour in the vodka and Chambord.

3.  Add the lemon juice and then top with soda water and stir.

4.  Garnish with a sprig of basil and the remaining blackberries threaded onto a cocktail stick and rested across the top of the glass.
It really is a totally scrumptious mix of sweet from the berries, a little savoury note from the basil and sharpness from the lemon; a lovely transitional drink from summer to autumn.
