Hope is the Thing with Feathers

On another fleeting walk between rainstorms, I stumbled across this little robin who sat so confidently upon a branch on the bank of a reservoir.  I don't know what it is about this place that breeds such brave little birds, however proud and self-assured it perched whilst whistling a tune to itself, seemingly totally unaware of my presence.

I carefully crouched down to get a closer photo, when it ruffled its feathers and I naturally thought he was about to take flight.  I was partially right, however it wasn't in order to get away from me.  The little bird hopped even closer to my camera as if to get a closer look at this device being pointed at it.

If you have been reading here for a while, you'll already be well aware of my love for birds and how much happiness they bring me.  I love to watch them flit from the trees and bushes to the bird feeders in my garden and can spend far too long doing so.  They relax me, even on a bad day.

With the January gloom and drizzle having thoroughly set in, I imagine I may be taking a little longer in watching them in the days to come.
Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul—
And sings the tune without the words—
And never stops—at all—

And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—
And sore must be the storm—
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm—

I've heard it in the chillest land—
And on the strangest Sea—
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb—of Me.

  1. I love Robins and their friendly, inquisitive nature. They seem so content in our company and never do their proud, red breasts look more stunning than the winter months. Beautiful post and poem. Sammie.
